Collection: Antonio Saura
Antonio Saura is a Spanish painter and writer born in 1930. He began painting at a very young age, in 1947, during his recovery from tuberculosis, an illness that kept him immobile for more than five years.
Antonio Saura then began his artistic career in Madrid, and from 1953 onwards, he repeatedly traveled to and stayed for long periods in Paris. Initially attracted to Surrealism, Saura eventually turned to what is known as Baroque Abstraction, one of the main characteristics of the Spanish group El Paso, of which he is one of the founding members.
A similar change occurred in his use of color; as his work matured, the very expressive colors of the early paintings gave way to monochrome gray tones. Antonio Saura also produced set designs for many works such as "La casa de Bernarda Alba" in 1963, as well as for an opera, "Carmen", directed by his brother.
Antonio Saura died in 1998 in the city of Cuenca.
